“This I Believe” about the Good Life What it Means to an...

Everyone desires to live a good life and people are always searching for ways to do so. In my case, by moving to the United States, I now have the opportunity to live a good life, but my definition differs from everyone else’s. I believe that living a good life means getting a good education, working hard, family support, willing to adapt new environment, having a leader, and becoming a self-made individual. My family and I moved from Pakistan eleven years ago in search of a better life. Their main purpose in moving here in the U. S. was to send me to an American college to gain a first-class education. My father ran a convenient store and a medical store for over 20 years. I remember that he used to walk to his shop to work†¦show more content†¦On the opposite end of the spectrum, Americans follow the proverb ‘time is money.’ Everyone works hard and people are motivated to achieve their goals. Although, in every country the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. It is possible to change that by working hard. One can live a good life if he or she works hard. A good example to support this is Benjamin Franklin. He was a great citizen of America and worked hard in order to live up to his definition of a good life. His father was a candle maker and Franklin was not satisfied with it, then he decided to work in the printing press. He made his trip to England, and while he was there, he found a job in the printing industry so he decided to stay there. He stayed in England more than five years and developed very good relations with Englishmen. Franklin was also sent to France to negotiate a treaty of commerce and stayed there nine years. He became a hero to the French. He was a scientist, inventor, philosopher, musician, and economist. He has proven this ideal to be true, people do not inherit their social status; they attain it. Many of us are inspired by his great work and want to follow his footsteps. I follow his philosophy of living a good life, by becoming a self-made man. He worked hard throughout his life in order to succeed. I really admire his work and I will become a self-made person just like him. While this is certainly not the only format to present truth, it is paramount to grasp the impact of experience on not only our own lives, but on the lives of those we teach. Mitchell outlines this in chapter 9 of his book, but it is significant enough to bear repeating. Undoubtedly, the best example of teaching from the four sources, and utilizing the four forms as well, is the teachings of Jesus. Jesus’ teaching does not lay out safe generalizations by which we can engineer a happy life. Instead, it is designed to startle us out of our prejudices and direct us into a new way of thinking and acting. It’s designed to open us up to experience the reign of God right where we are, initiating an unpredictable process of personal growth in vivid fellowship with him. Think of the Beatittudes. Paul writes, I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. And again, For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed†¦ Clearly, Christ’s actions, His participation in our lives and the lives of all the Saints, produced a staggering effect that Paul felt it necessary to communicate. Something about the power of God speaks in a way that words simply cannot. Although, it is clear that Paul taught using words, and that aspect of his ministry (as well as our own) should not be diminished, Paul implies in these verses that his actions spoke loudest, and Christ’s even more so. Paul is not the only New Testament author to tune into the source of participation though. John’s epistles, though circular at times, attest to Jesus’ command that loving one another is not a part of Christian living, but is Christian living. Turing to the letters of Peter, the role of participation in the life of a disciple, and the message of their teacher, is brought up again. â€Å"For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. † But what does Peter mean by this? A few verses earlier, he describes in detail the activity of a Christian’s life, as gifted by God Himself. Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. As N. T. Wright pens concerning these verses, â€Å"All these characteristics lead to one another, of course. The point is not to spend some years acquiring the first, and then move on to the second, and so on; they work together. † Peter is also implying here, just as Paul did above, that it is the how of Christian living that presents such a compelling Gospel. How Jesus lived, as well as how Paul and Peter lived, proved to be crucial parts of their arsenal in teaching people the Truth of Jesus Christ. Many could argue against the message (remember I Corinithians 1:22-23), but arguing against the power of that message as seen in the manner in which Paul and Peter lived their lives (and how they encouraged other Christians to live as well) was difficult to argue against. Bearing all of this mind, we must ask oursleves, what form is best suited for a message of discipleship, which finds its most valid source of information through the participation in that message of the teacher? Based on Mitchell’s writing, the teacher model would certainly be the best. As a â€Å"representation of reality,† relying the modeling aspect allows room for instruction and particpation, which is of course the same manner in which Jesus taught as illustrated earlier. A cirriculum based on this would be best suited for young adults (typical youth groups being included in this), and in a semi-formal setting. Obviously, this message can be gleaned elsewhere, but this particular environment seems the most fitting. With that in mind, figuring out the resources and skills needed to impart this message of discipleship, and how to arrange them into something coherent, will vary as the groups and relationships change. However, as with Barna’s examination of the twenty-four successful churches, the basic message will always remain the same, stem from the same passages of Scripture, and have the same outward appearance. Mitchell outlines this in chapter 9 of his book, but it is significant enough to bear repeating. Undoubtedly, the best example of teaching from the four sources, and utilizing the four forms as well, is the teachings of Jesus. Jesus’ teaching does not lay out safe generalizations by which we can engineer a happy life. Instead, it is designed to startle us out of our prejudices and direct us into a new way of thinking and acting. It’s designed to open us up to experience the reign of God right where we are, initiating an unpredictable process of personal growth in vivid fellowship with him. Think of the Beatittudes. Jesus was not only a living example of what this meant (and He equally lived out the rest of the Sermon on Mount as well), but He related the information in such a way that it could be grasped. Much of the confusion of those who heard His message, including his own disciples, lies in the factor that they did not comprehend: the Cross. As Paul puts this in I Corinthians 1:22-23, â€Å"For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness. The context of Jesus’ message was vital to understanding His mission. Significantly enough, the context was not hidden from the Jews or the Gentiles (Isaiah 53 stands as evidence of that, as well as numerous Psalms), yet because the minds of those listening were so accustomed to what they thought should be, that they missed what Jesus was telling them would be. It is participation in Christ’s suffering, the â€Å"follow me† of His message , that must be heeded in the life of every disciple. Bearing this in mind, I believe the most important source of the message of discipleship is participation. Tradition did not avail the disciples, because their living traditions conflicted with the Scriptural ones that pointed to Jesus’ fulfillment of Scriptures, and observation only produced depression in their lives, as they sulked away from Jesus’ crucifixion (it is harder to explain why participation is more important than inspiration, cheifly because I think inspiration plays a serious role in each of the sources). Paul writes, I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. And again, For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed†¦ Clearly, Christ’s actions, His participation in our lives and the lives of all the Saints, produced a staggering effect that Paul felt it necessary to communicate. Something about the power of God speaks in a way that words simply cannot. Although, it is clear that Paul taught using words, and that aspect of his ministry (as well as our own) should not be diminished, Paul implies in these verses that his actions spoke loudest, and Christ’s even more so. Paul is not the only New Testament author to tune into the source of participation though. John’s epistles, though circular at times, attest to Jesus’ command that loving one another is not a part of Christian living, but is Christian living. Alexander Hamilton

A little, slim, pale-faced, consumptive man just concluded the very best speech of an hours length I ever heard. So said Congressman Abraham Lincoln about Alexander Hamilton Stephens.1 Stephens was born near Crawfordsville, Georgia on February 11, 1812. His mother died shortly after his birth and his father died when Stephens was only 14. Even in childhood he was amazingly bright and his brilliant mind was noticed by many mentors who paid for him to attend college. Stephens graduated at the top of his class from Franklin College and then went on to become a lawyer. Soon after he was admitted to the bar, he entered politics and began to construct an exceedingly prominent place in Alexander Hamilton Stephens was only five feet seven inches and never weighed more than one-hundred pounds- even in adulthood. As a young man he was given the nickname Little Aleck. He was pale, odd-bodied, had lustrous eyes, and was often described as cadaverous. From the time of his birth he was sickly and puny and was continuously wrapping himself in many layers of clothes and coats to keep warm. Late in his life he defined happiness as To be warm.2 Little Aleck was voted into the state legislator in 1836 and continued to remain there until 1841 when he declined re-election. But, in 1942 he was chosen State senator. Then, in 1943 he entered the U.S. House of Representatives and served there for sixteen years. In 1859 he returned to private life by his own choice. He had been a firm advocate of the compromise measures of 1850, and having participated in the settlement of the Kansas troubles, accepted the result as an end of sectional strife During the presidential campaign of 1860, Stephens was an advocate of the election of Stephen A. From the information provided it seems that the conflict is arising in the operational area between the manufacturing and marketing department. Both departments are seeking their own division goals and are neglecting the overall effect on the organization. Indeed the manufacturing manager is probably regarding the marketing section as the extra expense, while the marketing manager perceives the manufacturing branch as the threat. This conflict being at managerial level will most likely transmit to the section’s staff, increasing the divergence between the two. The problem not only lies at the departmental area, but also at executive stage. Indeed this conflict should be managed at top management level by adhering more to the marketing concept. The first change that should be implemented is in the organizational structure from a functional one to a category management combined with brand teams. Such structure consists of routing a category manager for each shoe product line. This team will comprise marketing staff, like brand managers, information specialists and sales people, and individuals from other departments, such as research and development professionals, finance manager and staff from manufacturing, distribution and more. By including manufacturing staff with marketing employees, one can diminish such conflict because the production people would realize that marketers work is important for the organization and thus the threat element will decrease. The company has brought to our attention that it desires to expand into the Eastern Asian market where it is believed that the opportunity will be best and certainly more than double its profits by this venture. The Country of choice will be China; location is the city of Macau, which is an established trading center in Southeast Asia. B. Major Cross-Cultural Issues and Impacts: There are some marketing aspects to consider. Our approach must be culture sensitive to be successful. Insulting anyone in our business relations for work in China could end the deal or cause unnecessary delays. It is vital for all personnel involved in this venture to train with care in the marketing and cultural behaviors of the Chinese. Culture is a major issue and the company must be meticulous with training in order to be accepted. The Asian cultures are very careful about not losing face and this is critical. Keeping face goes back to Confucianism, which focuses on ones duty and loyalty, honor, sincerit y, and keeping harmony with all those related to them through family, business, and social ties. This is strictly followed with respect for age first in any of these relationships. One must never lose face with any of these ties for to lose face is to lose honor. The concept of face translates as honor, good reputation, and respect. There are four types of face. Face behavior is power-oriented behavior with the purpose of maintaining stability or control of one’s self. Diumianzi originates from the word mian and directly relates to one’s reputation or place in society. It is actions or deeds, which others have observed, and it is earned. Geimianzi is response to or giving of face to another through showing respect to the other person. Liumianzi is developed by avoiding mistakes and showing wisdom in making decisions. Jiangmianzi, when face is increased through others by another complementing one to a business partner or associate. Saving face or reputation is very strong in the Chinese culture. People are generally reserved, quiet, and refined. No boisterous or loud behavior is acceptable and considered in poor taste. Another way to explain this is quiet dignity, always keeping control of one’s emotions. The personnel who are involved in this business venture will need to beware of the quiet reserved behaviors of the Chinese and adopt such behavior in respect and get to know well each Chinese in the business relationship. It is important to save face at all times and avoid blunders or mistakes of our  Western culture, and never criticize the Chinese or any others involved in the business or personal relationship in Macau, China. This includes any associates whether foreign or domestic (China 2010). When greeting in China, the eldest is always greeted first and though a handshake is most common among Chinese with foreigners, sometimes with the elderly or government officials a slight bow will be given. During the greeting exchange, it is the practice by the Chinese to look at the ground when shaking hands or bowing along while addressing the individual with their honorific title and surname (China 2010). Visiting and eating also have special rules. A guest always waits for the host to give direction for seating. Formal dinners have different rules on seating arrangements. The conversation at meals is light, no business, or personal talk. The host will always serve an abundance of food. The host will usually escort a guest outside their home a distance even down a street and the guest should politely resist with the special ritual of hospitality. It is customary to bring a wrapped gift presented with two hands when invited to the home of a Chinese. In China, they do not open a gift in front of the giver; this is to avoid embarrassment for gifts that are not needed. Both the giver and receiver will always use both hands for the gift. Another very important gesture is to refuse the gift three times before accepting it; this shows that one is not greedy. Once the gift is accepted, it is important to express thanks to them for accepting the gift. If giving money gifts around New Years for personal friendship, the bills must be even bills and there should be an even number of bills, and given in a red envelope. Do not use white, black, blue, or the number 4 for anything because it is associated with death and funerals. This would be very embarrassing. Unacceptable gifts include clocks which symbolize time is running out, a handkerchief suggests a farewell greeting, shoes, especially straw sandals, suggest sad memories, and do not give ink pens with red ink which signifies death. Sharp objects like knives and scissors are not appropriate as it represents severing of relationships (Roberts 1998). Dress is important, no bright colors or blue jeans are to be worn, and all colors should be neutral with business meetings or dinners. Women must wear modest heals, nothing sleeveless or sheer, modest necklines, even the jewelry should be modest and not flashy. Relationship is everything; to hurry would be a waste. The  impact of our approach on Chinese business with regard to cultural differences is everything, the dress, the greeting, visiting, dinners, and showing of respect to all parties involved both Chinese, and U.S. will affect the stability of the relationship (King 1999). If the relationship is not sealed in the beginning with saving face or respect and trust with the Chinese, then the business deal may never take place or may be a very weak deal. The Chinese find friendship and trust to be far too important to rush through a business deal. Respect or face must be earned over time and never lost. C. Cross-Cultural Communication: Macau, China has a very strong economy with a GDP of 21.8 percent growth currently, is not expecting a recession anytime soon and has a steady growth rate of double digits up to 21 or more percent per year (Economy 2011). The humid weather and subtropical climate will be a great help in the special heat hardening process, which is necessary to extend the life of the engine components. It is important for us to pay close attention to detail and avoid using black, gold, yellow, red, or white on the engine components for any identification of parts used. Our company will need to use colors that are low key, perhaps silver, grey, brown, tan, or green, for any differentiation used to identify parts. Red is overused and is considered a New Year’s awareness. The black as mentioned earlier represents death and is not a good omen. Do not use black or red print on any of the parts or packaging, this represents evil and death and does not work in the Chinese market. When promoting the product for selling, again, color is of utmost importance and it is important to be creative. No black borders and no black print can be used, it is considered to be a bad omen or evil. The same is true with red print, it is considered to be related to death of the person reading the red ink. White wrap signifies death of the person receiving the gift and is not a happy color. Yellow used in marketing generally relates to pornography, so it must not be used or it will damage the face of the new company and possibly be an embarrassment or cause it to fail. The colors purple for power and nobility, blue green, and some other colors can be used with marketing to promote our engine components, but red, yellow, gold, black, and white are best avoided entirely for marketing purposes (Gao 2011). The advertising name should involve only two perhaps  three syllables with the last syllable having inflection upwards with intonation of voice. The Chinese consider this necessary for a favorable impression and for recognition of a product or service. Chinese words are often very direct and it would be best to use such words to gain trust and immediate understanding, and to portray quality and enjoyment of the vehicle because of using Company A’s engine components. Another aspect to show purity and trust is a picture of a mountain in relation to televised advertising or media advertising on the internet, and in our promotional brochure (Lehman 1992). Manufacturing companies like Sinotruck Group, Qingdao Seize The Future Automobile Co. Ltd., and Special Truck Company China National Heavy Duty Truck Co., to name a few major manufactures for heavy-duty trucks, to market the engine components produced by Company A would be our target audience for this market (Brighter 2011). China is expecting an increase in unit freight mileage leading to long distance transportation implying a demand for high-end trucks in the next few years. China is an excellent market for our truck engine components and this is good timing with China’s economic growth and increased investment in the trucking industry (Intelligence 2011). Currently, in China, the demand for trucks ranked first and automobiles ranked second (Intelligence 2011). Pricing of the engine components is based on production and the shipping costs for China. Choosing to build a manufacturing plant in Macau, China would prove to be financially prudent and help to keep prices in line with other competing engine makers in the truck industry for China. To protect competition in China, the prices would need to be equal in revenue as that of other countries in which these engine components are sold. To distribute these engine components in China it is necessary to have distribution partners for acceptance in the different market areas. Company A will have to build a network of distributers among locals where face-to-face relationships can grow. It will be prudent to train local mechanics for problems with the engine components that may occur after the sale. It is important to have connections with individuals in all areas of the business for trust and friendliness to the Chinese country. They see life as a group connection in all associations. D. Cross-Cultural Ethical Differences: Introducing ourselves into the Chinese market is crucial and must be done through an intermediary, someone who will give face favorably about Company A’s reputation. Chinese do not like to do business with strangers. The meetings need to be requested in writing preferably one or two months in advance by someone that they know and trust who connects for Company A. Plan to arrive a bit early, do not be late as the Chinese perceive this as an insult and it could cause negative problems for the business relationship. Punctuality is considered a virtue in China. It is important not to wear bright colors for meetings; men should wear dark colored conservative business suits. Women should wear a conservative business suit or dress with a high neckline and flat shoes or not much of a heel. There is no gender bias in China. About the introductions, when greeting the Chinese, the highest official or eldest will start the introductions and will either bow slightly while looking to the ground or shake hands while looking to the ground, do not look them in the eye during the introductions but do state their honorific title and then surname. Example, â€Å"It is an honor to meet with you, President Chen.† They have a great sense of humor and like to laugh if they are comfortable. If it is appropriate on your behalf at any time, be sure to laugh at yourself. The names of all who will be at the meeting and their titles, of course, would be important to have in each member’s portfolio. Once the introductions have been made and you have been given the invitation, provide information about Company A and what is desired to be accomplished. If offered a business card always accept with both hands and look at it with interest on both sides and then place on the table in the front of the place setting o r in a suit pocket or briefcase, never in the back pocket. When giving a business card use two hands and place Chinese side up to the Chinese officer. Only the eldest officer from each business will hold the conversation for negotiation. All others will listen. Posture and facial expression is very important to the Chinese and persons attending the meetings must watch carefully and be aware of their posture and facial expressions to remain neutral. There should not be any staring into another’s eyes only concentration on what is being said and careful glancing to notice expressions. Tone of voice is of great importance and  should be closely noted. Relationship cultivation is first, no agreement will be made at this meeting. When the meeting concludes the Chinese will say they will think about it, accept that answer just as they say, thinking about it (Ltd. 2004) and be patient for the deal to close at another time. It may take several meetings to finish the business deal. When the Chinese diplomat in charge invites the visiting company to a banquet, this is a signal that they are ready to give their final answer. They use a banquet to celebrate (Ltd. 2004). Our company needs to be patient and ready. In China, it is not customary to give gifts; it is considered bribery and illegal. It is only acceptable to bring a wrapped gift for the most senior officer in the company after the business deal is complete and state that the gift is from your company and that it is wished for the senior officer to accept it on behalf of their company. If there are wrapped gifts for more than one individual in a group, all gifts must be different and monetarily representative of the status for each individual. It is disrespectful to give the same gift choice to several individuals, the gifts must be different, and the value spent commensurate with the associate receiving the gift. If meeting over dinner our members must remember to wait until the host shows them to their personal seat, and recognize that the executive who called the dinner will be paying for all, no one is going â€Å"Dutch.† Remember to talk about whatever interests them and the food. Generally, light talk is expected. No business will be discussed while dining. The seating behavior is much like it is in formal dining with the United States. Unlike the U.S., though take time with dining and eat all you can or at least make it appear that time is not important. Eating is a very social event with the Chinese, never a rush. They may not hurry to be at a dinner or meal for a certain time, but may be slightly late. Timeliness is not crucial as is expected for a business meeting. It is rare to be invited to a Chinese home. If this occurs, be on time, take a gift and offer it three times but do not expect them to open it in front of you. Take off your shoes and do not pay attention to slurping or belching noises, this is the Chinese way to show enjoyment with the food. All business personnel must learn to eat with chopsticks (Ltd. 2004). These culture differences are very important though strange to what our customs are here in America. Please can you tell me which is correct, although I suspect Google has already answered my question. The forms loath, loathe, and loathed are not interchangeable. The word loath is an adjective. It’s from Old English laà ° which meant â€Å"hostile, repulsive.† It’s related to German Leid (sorrow) and French laid (ugly). Its most frequent modern usage is in the expression â€Å"to be loath to do something,† in which the meaning is not much stronger than â€Å"reluctant.† Ex. I am loath to admit my mistake. In Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, the Wife of Bath tells the story of the â€Å"loathly lady.† A young man must choose between an ugly (loathly) bride who will be faithful, and a beautiful one who will not be. The word loathe is a verb. It’s from Old English laà °ian which had the meaning â€Å"to hate, to be disgusted with.† The modern meaning is about the same: â€Å"to feel strong aversion for; have extreme disgust at.† The form loathed is the participle form. Ex. The child loathed the cruel teacher. A variant spelling of the adjective loath is loth. The th in the adjective has the unvoiced sound heard in thin. The verb loathe (despite the tutor’s note at Answers.com) has a different pronunciation. The th in loathe has the voiced sound heard in this. The silent final e is what signals the difference in pronunciation. In looking for examples on the web I came across the form â€Å"loather.† The Kingdom of Loathers is an online game. The Loathers is a music group. A blogger criticizing the ACLU indicated that the letters must stand for American Christian Loathers Union. I couldn’t find any indication of how the word â€Å"loather† in these examples is pronounced. If the â€Å"loather† is so called because of feelings of reluctance, I should think that the pronunciation is [lÃ… th-É™r] with unvoiced th. If the â€Å"loather† is so called because of feelings of intense dislike of something (as is presumably the case in the ACLU reference), then it would be pronounced with a voiced th: [lÃ… TH-É™r]. Nevertheless, validates his use of such a concept by asserting that death cannot validate itself since despite its conspicuous existent in the society, it is practical inexistent. Every dead person is unavailable and does not share his understanding of his situation. As scientists explain, such people cease to feel. Their senses die and they cannot literally share anything. Investigating death is therefore difficult and requires the use of more tactful theories of life to ensure understanding of the dead. People anticipate death but it is obvious that everyone would wish to live the longest. Any activity that links man with death is therefore feared. Men live carefully always avoiding any precarious situation capable of jeopardizing their lives. From the fear that the living have for both the dead and death itself, it becomes possible to understand the concept of death. In understanding death, Heidegger uses the experiences of the living. He postulates that people are very careful of their actions and avoid life threatening situations in order to prevent death. Personal identity Personal identity starts at the moment of conception, within time personal identity can change or not change. The change in identity differs in many instances by causes of psychological, physical or environmental changes in the person life. As life progresses in time people tend to change their views on many issues and identity is involved with those issues. Day to day activities also play an important role on a persons present or prior identity by being exposed to different elements encountered within their mind while operating in these activities. The mind is the most important influential part of a person to establish their identity thru time present or future. The identity is very important for the well being of a person in their everyday life, at work, and even with their relaintionships. When it comes to philosophy Personal Identity is a very broad and extensive topic, many philosopher have their own views on the issue. On the other hand my personal choice for this paper has to be a very well known philosopher by the name of John Locke who was one of the greatest in Europe in the late 1600s and early 1700s until his death. John Locker was born into the stage in Europe which was called the Enlightenment in which he helped find the identity of Thomas Jefferson to the idea of the Declaration Of Independence by stating this â€Å"men are endowed with certain inalienable rights, and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. With these words stated by Thomas Jefferson, John Locke began his successful thrill of Philosophy and the issue of Personal Identity. As Locke explains his version of Personal Identity he explains it in a higher power and often relies on faith, as opposed to science, to aid him in his major life decisions by using his personal identity. John Lockes views on personal identity are set out in the selection, Of Identity and Diversity, taken from his Essay Concerning Human Understanding. In this essay he talks about humans are able to understand by applying his theories and ideas. John Locke had his heart of personal identity in Section 9 of his essay in which he states his idea of a person is that of a thinking, intelligent (rational) being with consciousness of itself (self-consciousness). The notion of a thinking intelligent being amounts to this.While John Locke had his opinion and theories on personal identity other philosophers do too.In reference Identity is very complex and it has no set definition everyone agrees on. Sarup (1996) talks about identity by using the example of a passport. This may include a photog raph of the person as well as other details including nationality, a persons full name and date-of-birth. While a passport is a form of identity it does not express who you are as a person. It â€Å"shows you who you are so that you can be recognized in a bureaucratic sense† (Sarup, 1996). Sarup the author states â€Å" that identity is to do with who one thinks one is, what one believes and what one does†. While Kidd another author believes that â€Å"identity† relates to how we think about ourselves as people, how we think about other people around us and what we think others think of us. In other words, the ability to â€Å"figure out† (Kidd, 2002)who we are as a person. Kidd the other author states that we are shaped by our culture, and we shape it and perpetuate in it in our day-to-day lives. Although culture and identity are often linked they are, in fact, different in many ways than one . â€Å"With culture representing the ‘macro pattern- t he bigger picture- and ‘identity representing the smaller more ‘micro meanings we have as individuals† ( Kidd, 2002, p.7). In my personal identity I have experienced many facets within my 25 years of living in this earth.My personal identity has been developing each minute of the day,as well as days on and in years.In my readings and research I personally coincide with authors who state that personal identity is divided by two subsets.These two subsets are characterized by experience and learning.On the contrary to Lockes beliefs I feel these two subsets characterize my personal identitys growth.According to Wenger, identity can be seen as a negotiated experience, which is developed through engagement in practice in which gives us â€Å"certain experiences of participation and what our communities pay attention to makes us as participants† (Wenger, 1998). â€Å"Identity in practice is defined socially not merely because it is believed in a social discourse of the self and of social categories, but also because it is produced as a lived experience of participation in the specific communities† (Wenger, 1998, p.151). Learning is a very crucial item people should encounter because it benefits us in the long run when it comes to our daily lives and personal encounters and relaintionships.The many things ive learned thru out my years has set out to my advantage and my personal identity .While working for different companies and organizations my personal identity has differed in each setting because I had a different role in each one.Having different roles in each of my jobs,my personal identity had to change in time in order for my tenure their to be successful and keep up with the rest of the laborers.According to the author Wenger â€Å"A sense of a learning trajectory gives us ways of sorting out what matters and what does not, what contributes to identity and what remains marginal† (Wenger, 1998, p.155). When we speak of ones personal identity we speak as what makes us the person that we are.Our identity consists of what makes us unique and different as an individual and from others.According to Locke personal identity does not involve the body at all,the person could be involved by his soul.If such would occur Locke suggested that the person could be transferred by his own soul.However personal identity to Locke cannot be equated with the identity of a thinking substance either because the identity doesnt follow the identity of the soul ,but follows the set of individual thoughts it contains.Here is an excerpt of one Lockes essay where he states the personal identity would follow the thoughts themselves, and not the thinking substance. â€Å" Let any one reflect upon himself,and conclude,that he has in himself an immaterial Spirit,which is that which thinks in him,and in the constant change of his body keeps him the same;and is that which he calls himself: Let him also suppose it to be the same soul,that was in Nestor or Thersites, at the Siege Of Troy.But he,now having no consciousness of any of the Actions either of Nestor or Thersites,does,or can he,conceive himself the same person with either of them? Can he be concerned in either of their actions?Attribute them to himself, or think them his own more than the actions of any other man,that ever existed?But let him once find himself conscious of any of the actions of Nestor,he then finds himself the same person with Nestor.†(Section 15).Since we know and read that Locke rejects that the identity of a person is the identity of an immaterial substance or soul.For Locke at every moment you could have a different soul,thoughts,or a different thinker and still have the same person see.(Section 25) Another rejection by Locke is the idea the the identity of a man is needed for the identity of the person.It wouldnt be necessary since you could have the same person in two different beings as he states in the Prince and the Cobbler story. â€Å"For should the soul of a prince,carrying with it the consciousness of the princes past life,enter and inform the body of a cobbler,as soon as deserted by his own soul,everyone sees he would be the same person with the prince.†(Section 15). For Locke personal identity is not enough if it doesnt include the identity of consciousness.According to Locke consciousness is the ideas that a soul entertains,not in the soul that entertains them.The most important part of consciousness is memory,since memory can remember the actions and experiences of some past person,from the perspective of that person,then one thereby qualifies as identical with that person.To Locke he describes personal identity as a â€Å"forensic† notion.(Section 26).While most philosophers and philosophy get confused with his identity of consciousness Locke stated†For since consciousness always accompanies thinking,and it is that which makes every one to be what he calls self,and thereby distinguishes himself from all other thinking things:in this along consists consists personal identity and as far as this consciousness can be extended backwards to any past action or thought,so far reaches the identity of that person;it is the same self now it was then;and it is by the same self with this present one that now reflects on it,that that action was done.†(Section 9). Overtime John Locke has been criticized by his theories and his way of thinking by fellow philosophers and other entities.Thomas Reid has a view that is similar to Descartes in which a person who is a simple indivisible substance that has no temporal or spatial parts.Thomas Reid states that â€Å"My personal identity implies the continued existence of that indivisible thing which I can myself.Whatever this self may be,it is something which thinks,and deliberates,and resolves,and acts and suffers.I am not thought,I am not action, I am not action,I am not feeling;I am something that thinks,and acts and suffers.My thoughts,and actions,and feelings change every moment;they have no continues,but a successive,existence that self or I,to which they belong,is permanent,and has the same relation to all the succeeding thoughts,actions,and feelings which I call mine.† Reid argues that memory is the evidence for personal identity,but not the basis of personal identity.Reid developed seve ral arguments which go against John Lockes memory is the basis of personal identity.The four main arguments that Reide goes against Locke are: The Duplication problem which states one person may be identity with more than one person. The Brave Soldier Paradox which a man may be ,and at the same time not be,the person that did a particular action. The problem of removing reward punishment and responsibility. The minor objection that confuses consciousness with memory.
